The site of the city was first settled by the Splatsin people/ Syeelhwh Nation, who named the community Nintle Moos Chin, which means "jumping over place where the creek narrows". This name refers to a section of the Swan Lake that passes through central Vernon

The Vernon Public Art Gallery is a not-for-profit, charitable organization committed to fostering an appreciation of the visual arts for all members of the community. A part of the community for 60+ years, the Vernon Public Art Gallery (VPAG) has successfully evolved from an amateur to a professional gallery. VPAG is the oldest art gallery in the Interior Region of British Columbia. It is located at 3228 31 Avenue, in Vernon, BC.
