2025 Honour in the Arts
ARTSCO is proud to support the Honour in the Arts Award at the 50th Annual Civic & Community Awards, which recognizes individuals and organizations whose artistic contributions have made a lasting impact on the Central Okanagan. This year’s recipient is none other than Tyson Cook, widely known and loved as Freida Whales.
A cherished leader in Kelowna’s arts and LGBTQ+ community, Tyson has spent years lighting up the stage and championing inclusive spaces through the unforgettable persona of Freida Whales. From drag story times for kids at the Kelowna Art Gallery to energetic karaoke nights and drag shows for adults, their presence brings joy and connection to people of all ages. In 2024, Tyson took their advocacy even further—spearheading both the Pride Parade and the Trans Pride March & Celebrations, raising meaningful funds for trans youth. One of their standout events included hosting one of the largest story times in Canada, drawing more than 300 attendees and over 700 supporters. Their tireless community work has earned numerous accolades, including the Most Courageous Queen Award from the Quesnel Pride Society and Best Drag Artist in Kelowna—an honour they’ve held for four years running.
Tyson’s work reminds us of the power of creativity, visibility, and community care. They exemplify what it means to lead with both heart and humour.
We also want to recognize the remarkable finalists whose creative leadership continues to inspire:
Erikka Moojelsky, founder of AesthetiKs LAB, has created a brand-new all-ages creative hub in downtown Kelowna. Designed as a space where anyone can experiment and explore without fear of judgment, the LAB blends music, fashion, art, gaming, photography, and even culinary creation under one roof. Think of it like a gym—but for your creativity. With tools, resources, and community at your fingertips, Erikka’s vision is making space for the next generation of fearless makers.
Bonnie Gratz, Artistic Director of New Vintage Theatre, is a powerhouse in the performing arts scene across British Columbia. Her work as a director, performer, screenwriter, and showrunner has made a lasting mark on the stage and screen alike. Bonnie’s creative range includes everything from producing award-winning theatre to writing and starring in the satirical soap As the Sun Burns, all while sharing her insights as an arts columnist for Castanet News.
This year’s nominees embody the heart of our creative community—vision, passion, and an unshakable belief in the power of the arts to shape culture. Congratulations to Tyson, Erikka, Bonnie, and everyone making the Okanagan a more vibrant, inclusive, and inspired place to call home.
