FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 14 2014
Artists infiltrate local landmark for a last look.
You’re driving on one of Kelowna’s most popular bypasses – Clement Avenue from Spall to Water Street – and pass though the quickly fading industrial parts of Kelowna. One of the largest landmarks along this track – the BC Tree Fruits Packing House – is about to close its doors before a full redevelopment seeks to revitalize this section of Clement – and you have one last chance to see inside a building that has been a crucial part of Kelowna’s agricultural heritage. Combine with that the large-scale installation works by some of our regions up-and-coming artists and you’ve got a recipe for a great night out, and a great art exhibition.
In the spirit of the legendary Mad Hatter art exhibitions organized the by Arts Council of the Central Okanagan for the past three years, Beyond the Invisible will present the work of over 30 local artists over the course of three days in the BC Tree Fruits Packing House. Jennifer Lauriault, Chair of the Mad Hatter Committee, explains “This year’s Beyond the Invisible is so special because of the location. The BC Tree Fruits Packing House has such deep ties with the community. The fruit packing industry has touched everyone here at some point and now the neighbourhood is changing – this is the last chance to see the space in its original form. Even more amazing is the way the artists have responded to the space and the history it represents, creating surreal, immersive works that are inspired by this heritage. It will truly be an event to remember.”
Opening night for the exhibition is set for Friday November 28th from 7pm-12am and will feature live performances by popular local band Hot Knox and a DJ set by Rumpus Room. Admission to the opening is $10 (tickets available at the door) and visitors are reminded to dress warmly. The exhibition will also be open to the public on November 29th and 30th from 1-7pm.
The BC Tree Fruits Packing House is located at 816 Clement Avenue in Kelowna.
The Arts Council of the Central Okanagan is a non-profit organization that is the underlying support for anything and everything that is art.
