Call for Art: Expressions of Death
Last year, the Central Okanagan Hospice Association’s (COHA) Expressions of Death Community Art Show was seen by over 850 visitors and started a conversation about how art can communicate the challenging topic of dying, grief and life after. This year COHA is thrilled to announce that we will be holding Expressions of Death: personal journeys, at the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art from October 28 until November 12, 2016.
Expressions of Death: Personal Journeys is seeking local artists to submit work that investigates the theme of the personal journey we all make through life, until our deaths. They are seeking artwork that encourages conversation and engages with the community. The theme is open to interpretation, but in considering a piece for the show, they hope artists will consider the journey they are making to live until death, the ways they would like to see their lives at death, how living is taking place until the last breath, and what they have learned from those who died before them. They are seeking personal interpretations of the theme and welcome short write-ups that enhance the artwork through story. All mediums will be considered, from professional or personal artists.
COHA offers compassionate care, comfort, support and learning to those who are dying or grieving within our community through our volunteer and counselling supports. To learn more about COHA please visit us online atwww.hospicecoha.org. The juried community show will be held at the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art in the Member’s Gallery in Kelowna, BC. There will be an opening reception, date to be announced, that artists and guests are invited to attend.
Exhibition
Show will take place from October 25 – November 12, 2016 at the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art, 103 – 421 Cawston Ave, Kelowna, BC.
Submission Deadline
Tuesday, September 20, 2016
Jury
After the application deadline, Tuesday, September 20, 2016, a jury consisting of local artists and an organizing committee will review submissions. The jury’s decision will relate to what works best suit the theme of ‘living until death’ as well as the limited size of the Members Gallery at Alternator. Notifications as to whether artwork is accepted will be sent via email by Tuesday, October 4, 2016 to all applicants.
Application Process
Complete the following requirements and either email to [email protected] or mail to the attention of Karen Kuchta, Central Okanagan Hospice Association, 104 – 1456 St. Paul St., Kelowna, BC V1Y 2E6.
Any person who does art (professional, hobby, or for personal expression) are invited to submit a piece for consideration. All artwork will be returned to artists and you only need to deliver the artwork if you are selected for the show
Application Requirements
• Artist Biography and Statement; give a brief description about yourself and your artistic background.
• Application of the theme; how does your work relate to the theme of Expressions of Death: personal journeys?
• Proposal of the Piece; brief description of the content, medium and size of your piece. Work does not need to be completed, but must be ready before the exhibition date. If work is completed, please include an image.
• Portfolio; link to artist website or inclusion of 5-10 images of previous work if you are not providing an image of the piece.
• Where did you hear about the Group Exhibition?
Terms and Conditions
• Only works selected by the jury will be exhibited. No substitutions are permitted.
• All submitted works must be exhibition ready and wired for hanging.
• Organizing Committee will determine the installation of all selected works.
• Organizing Committee will install and take down the artwork.
• Artwork may be listed as for sale, should an artist choose, but must remain displayed until the art exhibition closes. Proceeds from sales go directly to artists with donations being gratefully accepted by COHA should a piece sell.
• Artists agree that photography of their artwork may be utilized by Central Okanagan Hospice Association for posting to social media and use in promotional items.
• Each artist is responsible for insuring his/her own artworks over the entire exhibition period including installation and takedown. The Central Okanagan Hospice Association and Alternator Gallery are not responsible for any accidental damage to the artwork(s).
• Selected artists are responsible to drop off and pick up their artwork at the assigned venue as notified prior to the exhibition.
Your completed application is an acknowledgment and confirmation that you agree to the terms and conditions outlined above.
