I Feel Like "No"! Lorraine Drdul
No! I don't want any sausages, bacon or ham
or crusty toast with strawberry jam.
No! I don't want to wear my red checkered shirt
or put on that itchy pleated skirt.
Why can't I have green and blue jelly beans
and run around in my cut-off jeans?
No! I won't tidy up all the toys in my room
or sweep up cracker crumbs with a broom.
No! I won't read anymore mystery tales
or practice those stupid piano scales.
Why can't I just run outside to play
and scatter the squawking crows away?
No! I'm not going to scrub my hands and feet
or brush my hair until it's neat.
No! I'm not going to wear that silly nightgown
or snuggle under the covers when I lie down.
Why can't I keep my fingers and toes out of sight
and go to sleep under the bed tonight?
No, Mom's not mad 'cause she told me so.
She still loves me even when I feel like No!
A resident of Kelowna, Lorraine has published a children's picture book story, called "The Blue Boots", available at Chapters and regional libraries. She is at present working on another.
