Equus caballus
February 22 through June 16 and features an exquisite and versatile body of work by local artist Jane Everett.
Equus caballus (from the Latin for horse) celebrates 30,000 years of the parallel journey of human and horse. Casting light on this journey is Jane Everett's work which focuses on the theme of the thoroughbred race horse. Included are drawings, oil on panel, oil and chalk on linen canvas, as well as sculpted chanfrons (horse face armour) created from stainless steel materials. Everett's works will be integrated with representations of early cave drawings from LasCaux and Chauvet, aboriginal pictographs, chalk drawings from the Renaissance and photographs from the Kelowna Museum's archives. As a whole, the exhibition traces the relationship between horse and human from the earliest artistic markings through to modernity.
Equus caballus will have an accompanying Catalogue, Art Poster, and Archival Panoramic Photograph of horseback riding in early Glenmore Valley for sale at the Kelowna Museum Shop.
The Kelowna Museum is located at 470 Queensway Avenue and is open Monday to Saturday 10:00am- 5:00pm. Admission is by donation. The Kelowna Museums Society is a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to the promotion of a greater interest and awareness of the military, agricultural, wine-producing and cultural heritages of the Okanagan Region through collection, preservation, exhibition and interpretation. INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED CONCERT PIANIST PERFORMS WITH THE OKANAGAN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
'That's a Classic'
April 13th, Kelowna Community Theatre, 8:00 pm April 14th, Cleland Theatre, Penticton, 8:00 pm April 15th, Vernon Performing Arts Centre, 4:00 pm
Internationally acclaimed concert pianist Robert Silverman will be performing on stage with Music Director Rosemary Thomson and the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra in a concert tour titled "That's a Classic" April 13th - 15th in Kelowna, Penticton and Vernon.
Silverman, a celebrated master pianist, has performed with orchestras on three continents including the Chicago Symphony, the BBC (London) Symphony, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestras, and every major orchestra in Canada. His expressive range and mastery on the classical Steinways and Yamahas in the valley theatres will illustrate the beautiful instrumentation and artistic expression echoed centuries ago in the performance of Schumann's arduous challenging Piano Concerto in A minor, Op.54.
"In my opinion, Schumann's concerto is the first and finest genuinely romantic concerto in the repertoire. It has EVERYTHING - melodies and harmonies to die for from beginning to end, especially in the last movement, with lots of pianistic brilliance. The orchestra does more than simply accompany. Unlike many concerti that sound a lot more difficult than they actually are, this one is way harder than it sounds," explains Silverman.
Silverman's performance has been described as "effortlessly poured out sparkling fountains of arpeggios that cascaded up and down the keyboard; huge chords exploded with breathtaking precision ... relentless exhilaration ... the experience was electrifying", wrote The St. Louis Dispatch.
The Okanagan Symphony Orchestra will be performing a kaleidoscope of classic symphonic music, exemplifying the works of three illustrious composers from the romantic and classical periods including Haydn's Symphony No.85 in B-flat major "La Reine"; Schumann's Piano Concerto in A minor, Op.54 and Beethoven's Symphony No.7 in A Major, Op.92.
Concert performances of "That's a Classic" opens April 13th at the Kelowna Community Theatre at 8:00 pm, with a second show on April 14th at the Cleland Theatre in Penticton at 8:00 pm, followed by an afternoon concert at the Vernon Performing Arts Centre at 4:00 pm.
The public is invited to attend pre-concert talks with the Music Director one hour prior to concert opening. A special dress rehearsal is open to the public on Friday, April 13th at 2:00 pm, at the Kelowna Community Theatre - admission is by donation.
For tickets in Kelowna call Ticketmaster at 250.860.1470, in Vernon call Ticket Seller at 250.549.7469 and in Penticton, call 250.493.6501 or 250.490.2426. Individual concert tickets are just $34. Special lower rates for seniors and students. For concert information visit the Okanagan Symphony website at www.okanangansymphony.com
