Angela Bonten

Angela Bonten

Being an artist defines who I am. The creative process is the essence of my life from viewing, photographing, studying and creating the work.

I do not adhere to one particular style but alternate depending on the subject matter and my mood. I generally work in series and keep exploring an idea.

In the Fabrication series I am recreating and drawing on the imagery from my fascination and love of textiles. I am intrigued by the structures and as I explore the theme I realise how many things around us are also interwoven and created on a grid.

My Rhythm of Nature series is looking at the flowing rhythms of the environ.

Angela Bonten

I am very spontaneous when I work. I love to respond to the accidents of the paint and try not to have a preconceived idea of what the painting will be.

For me painting is a time to explore and contemplate my environment.

Helen Fosbery

Helen Fosbery was born and educated in Vernon. She especially enjoyed school painting classes and was particularly encouraged by her grades 5 and 6 teachers. Being an enthusiastic gardener, she has always been deeply appreciative of the natural wonders and beauty of our world. While living in Lumby Helen joined a small group of pleasure painters who met each week in a school basement. One member had received her formal art education in Belgium and freely shared her knowledge - a tremendous benefit to all members. Periodically other professional artists were invited to give short workshops.

In 1971 Helen and her husband moved to Kelowna but she was forced to forego painting until her retirement in 1988. Since then it has become an absorbing retirement interest. She has attended classes given by Jim Kalnin, Liljan Christiansen, Joan Needham, and Tove Sorensen, and workshops by Gerry Puley, Alex Fong, Tom Tinkler, Phil Stang and Zoltan Szabo, also workshops on Salt Spring Island presented by the Federation of Canadian Artists. In 1989 Helen became a member of the Kelowna Palette Club and joined the Kelowna Watercolour Guild in 1994. Her work is mostly with watercolours, but she also enjoys oils and pastels.

"It was when I was in kindergarten that I first knew that I was seeing the world differently. We were to color Easter Rabbits that were memo graphed and handed out to the class. I worked diligently and when the finished products were hung around the room mine stood out. It was an Indian rabbit with long braids and buckskin dress. The colors were intense and I had done a great deal of detail work on the background and dress. The rest were all careful, in the lines and looked like ... rabbits.

In high school my design was selected for the mosaic installed on the office counter and was still in place 20 years later. I won top art student at graduation from high school. I studied art as well as dance and poetry in university. Later I used my creative skills to choreograph in a dance company, write poetry and plays as a high school drama teacher and to construct costumes for plays. I have always written poetry and it is very much the idea of poetry that inspires my art. I try to recreate the feelings that surround an object when I photograph it. The shifting planes and the sense of intensity and ambivalence that inform my poetry are an element of my digital art as well. The question I always address is the question of the nature of reality. Is there a "reality" or do we substantially shift or alter it through the process of perception. We each see only what it is we see and we can teach one another. I believe that there is an interplay between the subjective and the objective that lies finally in emotion. That is one of the reasons that I intensify the color and the use of color. I hope that each and every one of my works has a revelation. The more that the viewer looks at it, the more movement, shifting planes, and discovery there are presented for the viewer. These are not meant to be static pieces.
